A year round programme of music at Snape Maltings, sailing on the river,
RSPB reserves, National Trust properties, the sea and awe inspiring Suffolk
skies.
The shingle beaches of Aldeburgh and Thorpeness are decorated by the
bright flowers, the marshes awash with lapwing, snipe and godwit, even
the odd sailing boat. Golf course and heaths, lead to Aldringham, and
the Aldringham Craft Market. Just a few miles north is Dunwich, once
the third largest port in the country, now a tiny fishing village and
neighbour to Minsmere, RSPB's best known bird reserve.
The Alde River meanders south from Aldeburgh with only a shingle bank seperating it from the sea. At Orford the estuary becomes the Ore, where Orford Church and Castle stand out above the village, which boasts two nationally acclaimed restaurants and several excellent pubs. To the seaward side lies Orford Ness (accessible by ferry), a National Trust property, hiding a treasured landscape of shingle vegetation and rare and beautiful birds. There are lovely walks along the riverbank and around the marshes. RSPB Havergate Island is just a boat ride away.
Shingle Street A remote and lonely shingle beach lies beside the entrance to the Ore and Alde estuary. A brave line of cottages, their front gardens the sea, behind grazing marshes, home to lapwing and redshank and the few remaining Suffolk Punch, the largest English bred horse. From here you can see some of the Martello towers, built during the Napoleonic Wars to ward off a French invasion. Sail-boarding, swimming, walking, and bird watching, are just some of the pleasures to be enjoyed whilst staying in self catering accommodation on this fantastic wild stretch of coast.
Beyond Hazlewood Marshes, one of the last undrained grazing marshes on the Suffolk coast, lies Snape, marshes, reed beds and the magnificent Snape Maltings Concert Hall. Iken cliff with its fine church and rectory standing lonely on a little wooded hill at the head of the bay. There is much to see at Snape Maltings, now internationally famous as the centre for Aldeburgh Productions and the Aldeburgh Festival. As well as a huge programme of concerts there are art exhibitions, shops selling local crafts, furniture and food as well as boat trips along the estuary. Beyond Snape bridge the river narrows to a stream, travelling westward through gently rolling fields towards the clay lands of mid Suffolk and Marlesford, with it Grade I listed church, a cluster of flint and pink-washed cottages. From here are some delightful circular walks across the meadows and along the disused railway line to Framlingham, with its delightful shops and galleries and the castle.

Southwold & the Blyth Estuary
Britain's largest fresh water reed bed, RSPB Minsmere, Dunwich Heath and Southwold. Holiday East self catering accommodation makes the ideal base for exploring the beauty of the Blyth Valley.
Southwold is perhaps the best known town in the area. A popular resort for those who want to get away from the bussle and return to an England very little changed since the 1920s and '30s.
Lighthouse, pier, a sandy
shore and beach huts. And much more besides - fishing huts and fresh
fish, fine food and excellent restaurants, bookshops, galleries, and
of course great beer.
Walk south along the seafront to the open marshes and the entrance to the River Blyth. From here one can look down this glorious little estuary towards the 'cathedral of the marshes', Blythburgh church, and the beautiful Blyth valley. Two miles south of Blythburgh is the delightful, un spoilt village of Westleton, with its large village green, an excellent pub, open heathland and RSPB Minsmere just a mile or so beyond. Self catering cottages in the village include High Oaks and The Apple Store.
Westward up the valley you come to Bramfield with its Gothic House and the lovely crinkle-crankle wall outside the thatched church, which unusually has a detached round tower. A few yards from the church is the Queen's Head, Suffolk's 'Dining Pub of the Year' 2001 and 2002. Cosy and comfortable cottages for rental include Barley Cottage and Holly Meadow Cottage.
The charming little village of Holton with its delightful main street, white-timbered fan-tailed windmill at the lower end and the round towered church at the top. A lazy stream runs beside the quiet street with its attractive old houses, village pub and the delightful well-kept green on which you will find One Well Cottage. The attractive market town of Halesworth is just over a mile away.
Wenhaston: The village, with its five commons, is one of the larger villages in the area and dates back to Roman times! The fine, small church houses the famous medieval 'Doom' painting.
Laxfield: Pop down to the Low House below the churchyard. Here you can enjoy good pub food, excellent company and one of the few original tap rooms in the County. Nearer at hand is Heveningham with its great Palladian Hall. The fantastic Capability Brown serpentine lake and landscaped park lovingly restored in recent years.
