Self Catering Holiday Cottage Accommodation in Coltishall, Norfolk, East Anglia
The picturesque village of Coltishall in Norfolk is set on the banks of the river Bure a few miles from the Broadland capital of Wroxham.
The village dates back to Roman times, and in the middle ages it was a centre for the extraction of lime and marl, an industry that continued for many centuries. It was later replaced, when the river became navigable, by a thriving boat and wherry building industry. In Victorian times the village was more a town than a village and, as is apparent by the many large houses, a wealthy area.
Today the village has a large pleasant green where boats can moor and a surprising number of shops and businesses. It is linked to the village of Horstead, separated only by the river bridge. Due to the river narrowing and a weir, the river above the village is not accessible to boats.
The local church dates back to the 13th century with a 15th century tower and an unusual thatched roof.
Rivernere, Coltishall
This newly renovated cottage, dating back to 1826, is perfectly located just 100 yards from Coltishall village green on the banks of the river Bure. This beautiful reed-lined waterway is a gateway to over 200 miles of navigable broads. The cottage, which was originally part of the village pub, is situated down a quiet lane, making it ideal for walkers and cyclists. Surrounded by many walks, including the cycle track running alongside the nearby Bure Valley Railway. A short stroll takes you to three pubs serving good food, with restaurants and local shops a little further along. Nearby are the nature reserves at How Hill and Hickling Broad and the fine sandy beaches of Sea Palling, Walcott and Winterton-on-Sea are just a 20 minute car ride away. Day boats can be hired at nearby Wroxham, or visit Horning for a trip on the Mississippi Paddle Steamer. The medieval city of Norwich is only 7 miles away, with its cobbled streets, a castle, museums, cathedrals, shopping malls and theatre.
